SUMMARY: Step-by-step manual for tons of dog tricks.
AUDIENCE: Owners, and dog trainers in need of inspiration for their school’s curriculum.
REVIEW:
Style and contents: It does what it says on the tin: 101 dog tricks that are fully illustrated and explained step-by-step, all featuring Kyra Sundance’s gorgeous partner in crime, her dog Chalcy. Lots of great ideas, colour illustrations and very detailed explanations.
Possible improvements: The instructions over-rely on prompting in my view (e.g. applying pressure on the dog’s romp to teach the sit) so it can be a little on the invasive side, which makes most dogs uncomfortable. Given the well-known non-invasive alternatives, it’s a shame to turn what should be a fun activity for you and your dog into stressful exercises.
The verdict: I would recommend it if it weren’t for the use of prompting. But I love that it’s illustrated, detailed and well-explained, and I love the diverse ideas in the book.
